Landfill

The landfill of PS materials is the least acceptable waste management method because it represents a missed opportunity to recover valuable resources. However, PS is an ideal material for landfill because it remains inert, is non-toxic, odour-free and non-biodegradable by design. Landfill sites are not intended to be compost heaps but to be reclaimed when full. PS provides stability within landfill sites.

An interesting environmental analysis :
  • the global consumption of extracted petroleum for the manufacture of polystyrene foam is relatively low (0.2%) compared with that consumed for fuel (80%)


  • the low weight of polystyrene foam allows the lightening of packaging and therefore the reduction of the emission of greenhouse-effect gases during road-transport of goods


  • the use of polystyrene foam in the thermal insulation of buildings participates in the reduction of energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse-effect gases


  • the neutral effect on the environment and the stability over time of polystyrene foam allows for its usage in various sectors ( packaging, food preparation, graphic arts, construction, public works, horticulture)


  • polystyrene foam is recyclable after selective separation.


  • this thermo-plastic material can be re-introduced into the manufacturing cycle ( grinding, granulation, extrusion). Several cycles are possible, as against polyurethane foam which is not recyclable.


  • the combustion of polystyrene foam in industrial chimneys and waste incineration centres delivers an energy level superior to that of wood. There are also recycling processes using natural products : for example, the natural oils contained in orange peel ( D-limonene) can dissolve polystyrene foam


  • recycling can also be carried out through other activities, such as ground improvement, aeration of concrete and manufacture of insulating paint.
